How to Cycle an IP Address on a Comcast Modem

Comcast provides Internet services distributed over RF cables and accessible through a cable modem. The Comcast cable modem assigns an IP address to your account based on the Media Access Control address of the connected ethernet device, such as a computer or a router. You can cycle the IP address assigned to your Comcast account by temporarily changing the ethernet device connected to the Comcast cable modem.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the ethernet cable and remove the power from the Comcast cable modem.

    • 2

Power on the modem and wait approximately two minutes for the signal to synchronize.

    • 3

Connect a different device to the cable modem with an ethernet cable. For example, if a router or desktop computer is normally connected to the cable modem, connect a laptop to it instead. This forces the Comcast cable modem to cycle the IP address with a new one.
