How to Highlight in Keynote
Keynote is a presentation software package sold as part of iWork by Apple. Although Keynote does not have a single step for highlighting text, you can emphasize text with more versatility using transparent shapes in a few simple steps.

1
Identify the text you wish to highlight. This method will only allow you to highlight a single line or partial line of text at a time.
-
2
Select "Rectangle" or "Rounded Rectangle" from the drop-down Shapes menu to create a new shape. This shape will form the boundaries of your highlighted line.
-
-
3
Position the new rectangle over the text you wish to highlight and resize it to cover the text. While the shape is selected, resize it by clicking and dragging on the squares on the edges of the shape. For good design quality, be sure to center the text in the shape, leaving a margin at the edges--especially the bottom.
-
4
Choose the color of your highlight by changing the fill color of the shape. Change the color using the drop-down Fill menu on the Property bar or in the Inspector window, depending on the version of Keynote.
-
5
Adjust the opacity to 50 percent or less to allow the highlighted text to show through the shape. Change the color using the drop-down Opacity menu or slider on the Property bar or in the Inspector window, depending on the version of Keynote.
-
6
Adjust the depth positioning of the highlighting shape to change the highlight style. Adjust the depth of the highlighting shape by selecting the shape, clicking while holding the "Ctrl" key and selecting "Send Backward" or "Bring Forward." This is optional. Having the highlighting shape in front will alter the color of the original text similar to highlighting print with a marker. Having the highlighting shape behind the text will not alter the original text color and will create sharper contrast.
