How to Make Chum Bait
Fishing involves the use of a variety of tackle, including hooks, baits and lures. However, before presenting a rigged hook or lure into the water, some anglers choose to chum the water to work fish into a feeding frenzy or bring them to a specific location. Various methods are used by anglers for making chum for bait. One method involves the use of a common item that is first crushed and then dispersed onto the water.

1
Place 1 to 2 cups of dry dog food in a plastic bag. Use inexpensive or higher priced dog food depending on personal preference. Use dry food that makes a gravy when wet for additional attraction in the water.
-
2
Close the plastic bag and place it on a hard surface such as a floor or work bench.
-
-
3
Pound the plastic bag with a mallet to break up and crush the dog food so it will disperse more easily in the water. Break the food up into various sizes to allow consumption by different-sized fish.
-
4
Remove a handful of the crushed dog food from the bag and disperse it across the surface of the water. Allow the food to sit and dissolve in the water and move with the current. Watch for signs of smaller fish such as bluegill to arrive first.
-
5
Spread more dog food chum bait to hold small fish that will in turn attract larger game fish such as bass.
