How to Obtain HM08 in the "Pokemon" Games
In the "Pokemon" video game series, Hidden Machines (HMs) are items that allow you to teach your Pokemon useful skills. For example, certain HMs teach your Pokemon skills that allow you to move boulders or cut down bushes that impede your progress. In "Pokemon Ruby," "Sapphire" and "Emerald," HM08 contains Dive, a move that allows your Pokemon to explore underwater caverns. In "Pokemon Diamond," "Pearl," "Platinum," "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver," HM08 contains Rock Climb, which allows your Pokemon to scale hillsides.

Tips & Warnings
If you use Rock Climb in battle, it is a Normal-type attack that can confuse your opponent. The attack will not hit Ghost-type Pokemon.
If you use Dive during battle, it is a Water-type attack that takes two turns to damage your opponent. On the first turn, the Pokemon dives underwater. On the second turn, it emerges to strike the foe.
