How to Change the URL of Posts Posted on WordPress

WordPress offers a couple of ways to change the URL of posts you have already posted. You can set "permalink" settings to create URLs based on post names, post IDs, dates or any combination of the three. More settings exist if you use the "Custom Structure" field. The "Edit Post" screen also allows you to change the "slug" for a post. The slug is the name of your post formatted for use in a URL. You can change slugs at any point, including after the post is created.

Instructions

  1. Change the Post Slug

    • 1

Log in to your WordPress dashboard.

    • 2

Navigate to "Posts" in the left-hand menu. Click the name of your post to get to the editing screen and edit its content and information.

    • 3

Click the "Edit" button located under the title field on the "Edit Post" screen.

    • 4

Press the "Backspace" button to remove the current post "slug" --- the part of the URL containing the post name --- and type in the name you want to use.

    • 5

Click "OK" and then click "Update" to save.

    Change the Permalinks Structure

    • 6

Navigate to "Settings" within the WordPress dashboard.

    • 7

Select "Permalinks" under "Settings" to navigate to the "Permalink Settings" screen.

    • 8

Click the radio button next to the permalink structure you want to use. If you give many of your posts similar titles, then you will want to choose a more specific structure based on the date and name.

    • 9

Create your own permalink structure using the "Custom Structure" tool. Click on the "number of tags are available" link at the top of the page to see a list of structure tags you can use in the "Custom Structure" tool. You must at least include a tag for either the post name or post ID; "/%day%/%postname%/" is an example custom structure using structure tags.

    • 10

Click the "Save Changes" button to update your permalink settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not try to put regular file paths or URLs into the "Custom Structure" field. Only use structure tags in that field, as provided by the WordPress Codex.

  • Permalinks need at least a post name or post ID in order to grab the correct post. You cannot create a custom structure without one of them.
