If you are in awe of people who display seemingly endless amounts of energy -- no matter how little rest they get -- there are several things you can do in your own life to emulate that vitality. Many people find they consistently lack energy and always feel fatigued and sluggish. If you are one of them, take action to become an energetic person and make use of your full potential.

The first rule to regaining your energy is to manage your stress. If you are plagued by emotions that result from stress, you will likely find that you are zapped of energy. Simply put, emotions caused by stress eat up energy, even when you are not physically active. To control your stress, consider talking things out with a close friend or perhaps consulting a psychotherapist. Seek out relaxation techniques such as tai chi, yoga, meditation or self-hypnosis -- all of which can help you handle your daily stresses.

Nap when possible. As busy as you might be every day, there is always some time to sneak in a few minutes of shut-eye. If your child is away at piano lessons and you have the house all to yourself, take advantage of the precious situation and take a short nap to revitalize your energy levels. Naps should be a maximum of 30 minutes; any longer and you might experience difficulty in falling asleep normally that night, which will throw off your whole sleep schedule.

Consider what you eat and drink. Foods that have too much sugar can lead to glucose fluctuations, which then cause decreased energy levels. People often suffer from low energy due to a lack of protein. For a fast and effective energy jolt, eat a few handfuls of nuts, such as almonds, when you're feeling lazy. Finally, try replacing your coffee or soda with water -- or at least restricting your intake of the caffeinated beverages. These drinks can temporarily increase your energy by elevating stress hormone levels, but excessive amounts can leave you feeling burned out and exhausted.

Engage in casual banter. One way to feel energetic is to participate in stress-free, lighthearted conversation with other people. If you are at work and feel about to nod off any second, head to the lounge and rejuvenate your exhausted brain with easy topics such as celebrity fashion, favorite restaurants or the cliffhanger episode of your favorite television show.

Work out. One highly effective way to become an energetic individual is getting exercise on a regular basis. Working out ensures sound sleep at night, and it circulates oxygen, providing the cells with higher amounts of energy to burn. It also triggers the body to emit the hormones norepinephrine and epinephrin, both of which can leave you feeling refreshed and full of energy.

Schedule your time in a practical, realistic manner. Try to get one day of relaxation a week. Overbooking yourself can become an unending battle that puts you in a cycle of exhaustion and low energy. As exciting as it can be to have an active career, family and social life, it is also important for your well-being to set aside some "alone time" to decompress, relax and be alone with your thoughts. Being too busy can decrease your productivity and take a serious toll on your mental health.

Tips & Warnings

  • One easy -- and fast -- way to feel energetic is walking to the bathroom and splashing a little cold water on your face. Water works wonders for increasing energy levels. If you can, take a quick shower to stimulate your metabolism, your circulatory system and your overall energy.
