Document and file each instance your employee is late.

Documentation and clear expectations are essential when you need employees to adhere to certain work hours. If your expectations are not clear, your employee might not realize he's not following company protocol. If your employee is fully aware of company policy concerning work hours and tardiness, writing him up is a simple task, especially if you've documented the discrepancies.

Instructions

    • 1

Document the times your employee is late to work. Write down any discussion you had with him regarding his behavior. Follow your company's protocol when it comes to discipline. An employee might get multiple warnings before earning a writeup.

    • 2

Schedule a meeting with your employee, according to your company's discipline policy. If you do not have a private office, reserve the conference room or another private office to hold the meeting.

    • 3

Fill out a discipline form or create one stating the times and dates the employee was late, what the company's policy is on tardiness, measures you took to ensure the employee was aware of work times and how you expect the employee to resolve the issue. Include what disciplinary action is next if the tardiness continues.

    • 4

Read the writeup to your employee. Ask if she's got questions or comments. Write them on the discipline form, along with your responses.

    • 5

Sign and date the form. Have your employee sign and date it.

    • 6

Make a copy to keep in your files and a copy for your employee, if he requests one. Put the original form in your employee's permanent file.

Tips & Warnings

  • Guide the meeting with a neutral tone and respectful behavior. Your employee likely will follow your lead.

  • Document each time your employee is late. Showing the times and dates diffuses denial and claims of unsubstantiated accusations.
