How to Make Your Own Ladies Apron Coverall
With some basic skills you can make an attractive apron that covers you from chest to knees, and keeps your clothing clean and you looking fashionable while you are busy cooking, doing chores or working on art projects. You can make full-size aprons for adults or miniature aprons for girls. Add a ribbon border to the hemline or neckline, and embellish the apron with silk flowers or iron-on gemstones for a stylish look.

1
Measure the circumference of your waist just above your belly button. Add 1 inch to this measurement, and draw a line across the top of the fabric. Find the center of the line, and make a small dot.
-
2
Measure from your belly button to your knees, and add 1 inch to this measurement. Draw a vertical line from the dot down the fabric to this length. Make another small dot.
-
-
3
Draw a line through the bottom dot, using the natural waist circumference measurement. The dot should be in the center of the line with half the length on each side of it. Draw vertical lines down the sides of the fabric to connect the ends of the top and bottom lines. Cut out the rectangular shape.
-
4
Lay the rectangular piece with the wrong side up and the bottom in front of you. Turn over ½-inch of the bottom edge of the fabric, and sew it to make a smooth hemline. Iron the fold to make the fabric lay flat. Fold over ½-inch of fabric at each side, and sew the sides to make smooth edges.
-
5
Make a ½-inch pleat at the far right side of the skirt along the top edge. Pin it in place, and move over 1 inch. Make another pleat. Continue across the top of the skirt making pleats every inch. For a 30-inch-wide skirt, you can expect to make about 20 pleats across the top of the skirt. Sew the pleats in place. Sew each pleat from the top edge of the fabric downward through the folded pleat about 1.5 inches.
-
6
Take your measurements for the top part of the apron. Measure from your natural waistline to 1 inch above your bust line for the length. Measure from underneath your right arm to underneath your left for the width. Add 1 inch to both the length and width, and draw the rectangle on a piece of fabric. You can use the same fabric as the skirt for this step or use one in a complementary or contrasting color. Cut out the rectangle.
-
7
Fold ½-inch of each side onto the wrong side of the fabric, and sew them in place to make smooth edges. Iron flat. Pin one of the width sides to the top of the apron's skirt. Sew the two edges together.
-
8
Cut a long length of 2-inch-wide ribbon in a contrasting or complementary color. Make the ribbon at least twice as long as your natural waist circumference to make the apron ties. Find the middle of the ribbon by folding it in half, and find the front middle of the apron by folding the apron in half lengthwise. Pin the middle of the ribbon to the middle of the apron. The ribbon should sit over top of the seam line between the top and skirt. Pin the long edges of the ribbon to the apron, and sew it in place. This is the waist tie for the apron.
-
9
Cut two long lengths of the same ribbon to make the apron straps. Pin one end of each ribbon to the wrong side of the top of the apron at the right and left sides. Sew the ribbon straps onto the apron. Try on the apron, and tie the waist ribbon and the straps to make sure the apron fits.
-
10
Sew decorations to the apron if you would like, such as a silk flower at the top right and left sides of the apron.
