How to Verify Resident Identification in the State of New Jersey
When entering into a transaction with someone in the state of New Jersey, you may wish to verify that they have official New Jersey state residency. Although there is no such thing as a formal "residency" application for a state within the United States, it is established based on a person's intent. Generally, a person is a resident when they live in a state for at least 12 months. However, other indicators of residency include a New Jersey state driver's license.

1
Review the person's driver's license. A driver's license is evidence that the person intends to remain a resident of the state of New Jersey for longer than 12 months. If they have a valid license, the document will list their name, address and include a photo, among other identifying information.

Review the person's utility bills, such as an electricity or gas bill. If the person prints a bill off the Internet, make sure that the electric or gas company's website address is listed at the bottom of the web page printout. The document should include the person's name, account number and address.

Review other identifying documents, such as a voter registration certificate, jury duty summons, W-2, a recent pay stub, or a tax bill from the local city or county government. These documents will include the person's name and address, at a minimum.
