Diamonds are the most popular and desired of all precious gemstones. They are often given to symbolize romance, love and commitment. For these reasons, they are featured in all types of jewelry, including earrings, bracelets, brooches, rings, and necklaces. A diamond can be transferred from one type of jewelry to another with relative ease. For example, with the right tools and a bit of time, you can convert a diamond ring into a diamond necklace.

Things You'll Need:

  • Diamond Ring
  • Prong-Setting Pliers
  • Necklace Chain
  • Ruler
  • Pendant Basket Setting

Remove the diamond that is set in your ring. Lift the tiny metal prongs away from the diamond using prong-setting pliers. Pull the diamond out of its setting.

Lay the diamond on a flat surface. Measure the diamond’s width, length and depth in millimeters using a ruler so that you can determine what size of pendant basket setting you need. Note that basket settings are categorized according to their size in millimeters.

Identify the cut of the diamond. Remember that diamond cuts include, but are not limited to, emerald, princess, round, pear, cushion, and rose. Know the cut of the diamond so you can choose a pendant basket setting in the right shape as well as the proper size.

Choose a pendant basket setting that corresponds to the size and cut of the diamond. Purchase a pendant basket settings in precious metal, such as platinum, gold or sterling silver to ensure your diamond will be set in a durable, quality metal that won't change color.

Lay the new pendant basket setting on a flat surface, with its prong-side facing up toward the ceiling. Position the diamond in the pendant basket settings with its front facing upward toward the ceiling. Bend the tiny metal prongs of the basket settings down over the diamond using prong-setting pliers. Make sure the prongs are pressed snugly against the diamond to hold it in place.

Slip a necklace chain through the bail--or small metal loop--at the top of the pendant. Your diamond necklace is complete.

Tip

Find pendant basket settings at online jewelry supply vendors, such as firemountaingems.com or riogrande.com, or have a professional jeweler order one for you. You can buy a plain basket setting for your diamond and solder a bail onto the top of it to turn it into a pendant. You can cut the basket setting off of your ring with a jeweler’s saw, keeping the diamond inside. Then solder a bail onto the top of it to turn it into a pendant.
