# How to Braid a Six Plait Round Braid

Save

A six-plait round braid can be done with hair, rope, cords and even dough. It is thicker than a four-plait round braid and slightly trickier to complete. It may take some practice before you get it right, so you may want to practice before you have to attempt it. In each possible 6-plait braiding method, strands are numbered from left to right and are crossed over other strands unless stated otherwise.

## First Method

• Gather six strands of equal length.

• Move the second strand (from the left) right four strands so it becomes the last strand. From left to right, the strands A-B-C-D-E-F are now A-C-D-E-F-B.

• Cross the first strand over two strands to the left so it is the third strand from the left. [A-C-D-E-F-B to C-D-A-E-F-B]

• Move the fifth strand (second from the right) left so it is the first strand on the left. [C-D-A-E-F-B to F-C-D-A-E-B]

• Cross the sixth strand over two strands to the left so it is now the fourth strand. [F-C-D-A-E-B to F-C-D-B-A-E]

• Repeat Steps 2 through 5 until the braid is the desired length.

## Second Method

• Start with six strands of equal length.

• Move the sixth strand (from the left) to the left two strands so it is the fourth strand. [A-B-C-D-E-F to A-B-C-F-D-E]

• Move the second strand right so it is the sixth strand. [A-B-C-F-D-E to A-C-F-D-E-B]

• Move the first strand right two strands so it is now the third strand. [A-C-F-D-E-B to C-F-A-D-E-B]

• Move the fifth strand to the left so it is the first strand. [C-F-A-D-E-B to E-C-F-A-D-B]

• Repeat Steps 2 through 5.

## Third Method

• Start with six strands of equal length.

• Cross the first strand on the left over four strands so it is between the fifth and sixth strand. Wrap it under the fifth strand and then cross it over the fourth strand. The first stand should now be the third strand from the left. [A-B-C-D-E-F over to B-C-D-E-A-F over to B-C-D-E-A-F under to B-C-D-A-E-F over to B-C-A-D-E-F]

• Cross the sixth strand (strand furthest to the right) over four strands. It should be between the first and second strand (what was the second and third strand in the previous step). Loop the strand under the second strand and then over the third strand. This sixth strand should now be the fourth strand from the left. [B-C-A-D-E-F over to B-F-C-A-D-E under to B-C-F-A-D-E over to B-C-A-F-D-E]

• Repeat Steps 2 and 3.
