It is your right to file an appeal for an unhappy judgment.

If you are unhappy with a judgment made by a court in Tarrant,Texas, it is your right to appeal that judgment. An appeal in the state of Texas will be sent to one of the 14 Texas appeal courts. The Second Court of Appeals serves 12 counties including Tarrant County. This appeals court will hear all civil appeals and criminal appeals except where the death penalty as been imposed. Death penalty cases are appealed to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin.

      Record the date the judgment was made on your case. In Texas, you have 30 days to file an appeal after judgment was made. You may have 90 days to file an appeal as long as you filed a motion for a new trial in a timely manner. In some cases, an extension may be granted as long as you file the extension before 15 days after the original deadline had passed.

      Write the notice of appeals. The notice of appeals must identify the trial court, case number and style, date of judgment of order or sentencing, names of each party filing the notice, the court to which appeal is taken and the reason why you feel an appeal should be made.

      Complete a docketing statement. When filing an appeal in Texas you are required to file a docketing statement. Failure to do so can result in a denial of your appeal. You can locate the forms on the Texas Fourteenth Court of Appeals website. There is a docketing statement form for criminal cases and one for civil cases. The docketing statement requests information regarding the description of the case, parties involved, the trial court, attorneys involved, date judgment was made and other pertinent information regarding the case and appeal.

      File and pay all applicable fees. The fee to file an appeal in Texas is $175 in 2011. If the courts sees fit, it may waive these fees after it has received the appeal. You should file all completed forms and appeal notice with the trial clerk located at 1307 San Jacinto St., 11th Floor Houston, TX 77002.
