1
Make sure your hair is clean and dry. It's OK if your hair hasn't been washed in a day or so, but it should not be too greasy or dirty. Your hair should be fully workable and not "gunked up" with product.
-
2
Gather the section of hair at the top of your head. This section of hair goes from the front of the hairline to about the middle of your head. Run your fingers through the hair to make sure it is smooth. To add a bit of height, you can backcomb the back of the hair section with your fingers, teasing it and pulling strands downward.

3
Pull the section of hair back and twist at the midpoint of the top of your head. Then, at the twisted point, push the hair forward to create the "poof." Make sure the poof is well-shaped and smooth.
-
4
Secure the poof at the twist with bobby pins. At this point, you can delicately comb the poof back a bit or spray with a bit of hairspray to smooth out the look.
-
5
Gather the sections of hair on either side of your head, one at a time. Twist the section as close to the scalp as possible, then secure with bobby pins. Repeat on the other side.
