1
Choose a time to remove the nest when it is inactive. Look inside the nest to ensure there are no eggs. Federal law deems removing most active nests illegal, however, some exclusions include house sparrows, starlings and pigeons. For more information, review The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. 2
Wear latex gloves to avoid skin contact when handling the bird nest. Put on a dust mask to avoid inhalation of any dust produced when removing the nest. Wear protective glasses to avoid eye contact with falling debris.

3
Place a tarp on the ground below the nest to catch the nest in case it falls during removal.
-
4
Create a solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water in a spray bottle. Saturate the nest to help prevent dust and to disinfect.
-
5
Sever the bottom of the nest from the porch frame using the blade of a shovel.
-
6
Scoop up the nest by hand or with the shovel. Place the nest in a plastic garbage bag for disposal.
-
7
Scrape any stuck-on matter from the nest site using a stiff scrub brush. Spray the area again with more bleach solution to further disinfect.
-
8
Seal the open spaces between the porch floor and the ground to prevent birds from being able to access the space. Options include netting, tight-weave lattice or porch skirting. Secure materials with staples, nails or screws.
-
9
Encourage non-pest birds to nest at a safer location by installing a birdhouse somewhere away from the house. Birdhouses can go on trees, posts or poles.
