How to Disable Security on Your Netgear Router

Netgear produces a line of wireless routers designed for home and small business environments. Wireless routers are built to support different security encryption methods including WEP, WPAv1 and WPAv2. With a security encryption method in place, all wireless transmissions are considered secure and only users who know the password can access the network. This may not be a desirable configuration. For example, open wireless hotspots don't need security encryption. You can disable the wireless security on your Netgear router by logging into the router's Web interface.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open a Web browser.

    • 2

Type "192.168.1.1" without quotes into the address bar, then press "Enter."

    • 3

Type "admin" for the username and "password" for the password, then press "Enter."

    • 4

      Click "Wireless settings."

    • 5

      Click "None" under "Security Options."

    • 6

Click "Apply" to save and apply the settings. The router now has disabled security and is open.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should not disable the encryption security on your Netgear router unless you have a good reason for doing so and understand the potential consequences. Without strong encryption, your network is susceptible to snooping and hacking by unauthorized users within range of your wireless signal.
