Check the growth of the bonsai leaves. Note any leaves that fall outside of the desired tree pattern. Examine the bonsai for new leaf growth as well. Count the number of new leaves; it is time to trim the bonsai after six to eight new leaves have appeared.

Hold the shears in one hand and the leaf in the other. Pull the leaf gently and cut the leaf off at the base, leaving the branch intact. Trim the leaves that fall outside of the bonsai shape first, then trim the new leaf growth.

Examine the branches once the leaves are trimmed. Look for any brown color branches or unhealthy areas on the plant.

Cover any brown or damaged branches with pruning paint, a special solution especially designed to treat tree wounds. Dip a small brush into the solution and carefully apply to any cuts or damaged areas on the Fukien Tree. Use the pruning paint according to directions.

Fuckien Teas are hardier than most bonsais and generally do not require wiring to retain their shape.
Prune once a month for the best results.
