There are thousands of holiday-themed children's books available, but how do you choose the ones that are right for your children? Start with your family's personal approach to the holidays and take it from there.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Book Of Advent Prayers
  • Books About Saint Nicholas
  • Books Of Kwanzaa Crafts
  • Children's Board Books
  • Children's Books
Step1
Select something in line with your spiritual beliefs ' there are lots of books out there that emphasize the religious nature of the holidays, and many others that place more emphasis on other rituals, celebrations and secular holiday symbols.
Step2
Look for books that emphasize what is important to your own family ' books that reflect your holiday traditions, or that contain traditions that appeal to you, whether or not you actually practice them.
Step3
Search for books that reflect your child's special interests ' a child who loves cats may enjoy reading about the holiday season from the point of view of a family pet, while a child who is involved in dancing may prefer an illustrated version of the 'Nutcracker' story.
Step4
Choose books that are appropriate for your child's age, reading level and personality. If you find a great book that seems a little too advanced, consider putting it away for next year or just taking a little extra time to explain it to your child.
Step5
Look for books that you will want to read with your children throughout the season and perhaps throughout many seasons. Many families read special holiday books together year after year, so it's important to find something that will hold your interest as well as your child's.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many classic children's books address holiday-related themes, so don't just look for books that contain the name of the holiday in the title. 'Little Women' begins with a wonderful holiday scene, for example, and the 'Narnia' books contain spiritual elements that fit in well with many approaches to the holiday season.
  • When in doubt, ask the manager of a good children's bookstore or book department for suggestions.
  • Don't forget to read right through a book before you offer it to a young child, just to be sure that the contents are what you would consider appropriate!
