There are many times when you'll need to know the size of a hard drive: when you need to defragment the hard drive, when installing large programs, when upgrading the operating system or adding more hard drive storage. It takes a few simple steps to locate the size of the hard drive or multiple hard drives on a Windows computer, with the same procedure applicable for Windows Vista and newer operating systems.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click "Start" and click "Computer."

    • 2

Click on the hard drive under "Hard Disk Drives." A check mark appears when it is selected. Right-click on the hard drive. Click "Properties" from the pop-up menu.

    • 3

Click the "General" tab in the "Properties" dialog box. A pie chart appears and the information about how much free space and used space is available on the hard drive.

    • 4

Click "OK" to close the "Properties" dialog box.
