Remove categories from navigation bars in the dashboard.

Adding, editing and removing links from navigation bars in WordPress became easier with the release of WordPress version 3.0 late in 2010. You can hide categories from a navigation bar by removing them from the menu the bar is using. This is done through the WordPress back-end, called the "dashboard." Edit your menus in the "Menu" subpanel under "Appearance" or hide the option to add category links altogether. You can remove any number of categories from a navigation bar.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your WordPress dashboard.

    • 2

Navigate to "Appearance" and click the "Menus" link to load the "Menus" subpanel. This page contains all the settings for your WordPress navigation menus. Click the tab containing the name of the menu you want to edit.

    • 3

Locate the gray bars labeled "Category" in the list of menu items on the right-hand side of the screen. Click the "Down" arrow to expand any menu item you want to remove. Click the red "Remove" link to remove the category from your navigation bar. Click the blue "Save Menu" button when finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click the "Screen Options" tag at the top of the "Menus" subpanel page, then uncheck "Categories" to hide it from the page. Do this when, for example, developing a website for a client who might "break" the menu if given full access to every menu option. If the client requests it later, just tell her how to turn the "Categories" box back on.

  • When making changes to menus, check your site to make sure that the changes did not break the navigation bar. This happens when you add too many links or, in some cases, when you remove an important link the code was relying upon.
