Do-it-Yourself Hemp Jewelry

You can make your own hemp jewelry with hemp twine. Hemp twine is made by knotting together a long and a short piece of twine into an interwoven pattern. Add beads to your hemp jewelry while you are knotting it or you can leave it plain to create an unbroken ladder or ride on its side. Once you have made your own hemp jewelry you can tie it around your wrist or neck to wear it.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of twine that is twice the length of the finished piece. If you are going to make a 6-inch bracelet, cut it 12 inches long. If you are going to make a 36-inch necklace, cut it 72 inches long.

    • 2

Cut a piece of twine that is four times the length of the finished pieces. For a 6-inch bracelet, cut it 24 inches long. For a 36-inch necklace, cut it 144 inches long.

    • 3

Fold the shorter twine in half. Fold the longer twine in half around it, so that their bent or looped ends are touching and their free ends are facing the same direction. Hold the bent or looped ends together and tie the twine into a simple overhand knot 1/2 inch down from the end of the loop.

    • 4

Pin the loop to your pants with the large safety pin. Bring the ends of the twine forward to face you. Hold the two center short strands of twine together in the middle and place the longer strands on either side of them.

    • 5

Move the left strand behind the two center strands to make a loop and drape it over the right strand. Move the right strand over the top of the two center strands and insert it into the loop of the left strand. Pull the right and left strands tight to make a knot. Pull down the two center strands to even out the knot. Continue knotting in this manner to create a spiral pattern with the hemp twine.

    • 6

Add a bead at even intervals on the knotted twine, after every six knots tie with the twine. After you have made a knot, insert the two center strands into a bead. Slide the bead up to the knot. Tie the next knot tight against the bottom of the bead. The right and left strands will be hugging around the sides of the bead.

    • 7

Continue knotting and adding beads after every sixth knot. When you reach the desired length, tie another simple overhand knot with the hemp twine. Hold the ends together and trim them to a uniform length.
