Like any other word processor, open-source OpenOffice Writer gives users control over aspects of a document from font face to paragraph spacing to page margins and page orientation. The latter aspect rotates the page, so a standard letter-size page runs 11 inches wide by 8.5 inches long instead of 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches long. Instead of addressing page orientation in document or file settings -- the File menu or Page Layout tab, as users of Microsoft Word might expect -- OpenOffice places it with other formatting options.
Open or create a new document in OpenOffice Writer.
Click "Format" and then choose "Page."
Choose "Landscape" next to "Orientation," or if the pages were already set to Landscape, choose "Portrait" to rotate them.
