How to View Works in OpenOffice WPS

Different word-processing programs can read different types of file formats. Microsoft Works uses the WPS format as its default file format. Unfortunately, while OpenOffice can read a variety of file formats, WPS is not one of them. Therefore, to view a Works document in OpenOffice, convert the WPS file to a format that OpenOffice can recognize.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the WPS file in either Microsoft Works or Microsoft Word.

    • 2

Click the "File" menu and select "Save As."

    • 3

Click ".rtf" in the "File Type" drop-down menu, if you opened the file in Works. If you opened the file in Word, select ".doc" in the "File Type" drop-down menu.

    • 4

      Click "Save."

    • 5

      Open OpenOffice Writer.

    • 6

Click the "File" menu and select "Open." Navigate to the .rtf or .doc file you just created, click it and then click "Open."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have Works or Word, convert the .wps file online or download third-party software to convert it.
