A solution's pH measures its acidity, which is the concentration of hydronium (H3O+) ions in it. These hydronium ions form when a hydrogen ion, or a proton, detaches itself from a molecule that dissociates in water. The proton then joins a water molecule, forming a positively charged ion. The pH scale is logarithmic, which means that every change in a solution's pH corresponds with a tenfold change in the concentration of hydronium ions.
