How to Partition a Mac With HFS

Computers running the Mac OS X operating system use the Hierarchical File System Plus to maintain files on the computer's hard drive. HFS+ supports the features necessary for the UNIX-based Mac OS X, including file and folder permissions, and resource forks. Every Mac must be formatted with HFS+ for Mac OS X to install to the hard drive. You can partition and format a Mac with HFS+ by booting from the installation disc and running the Apple Disk Utility.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the Mac OS X installation disc into the disc drive, then restart the computer.

    • 2

Press and hold the "C" key on the keyboard until the Mac begins to boot from the disc.

    • 3

      Click the blue "Next" arrow.

    • 4

Click the "Utilities" menu at the top of the screen.

    • 5

      Click "Disk Utility."

    • 6

Click the Mac's internal hard drive in the left column of the window.

    • 7

      Click the "Partition" tab.

    • 8

Click "1 Partition" under "Volume Scheme."
