How to Color the Background in Microsoft Word

Just like the bright white of a piece of paper pulled from a fresh ream, the white on a Microsoft Word default page can be blinding. But unlike with real paper, Word users may change the background color of the page with a few clicks. Select a background that goes with the theme of the Word document or just provides a different option over the black text on white page default setup.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Microsoft Word. To change the background of an existing document, click the "File" tab and select "Open." Browse to the document and double-click its file name. Otherwise, Word opens a default white page to the screen.

    • 2

Click the "Page Layout" tab at the top of the work space. Click the "Page Color" button in the middle of the ribbon below the tab.

    • 3

Click one of the small colored squares on the fly-out menu to instantly change the background color of the Word document.
