How to Make a Soda Can Hat
A soda can hat is a whimsical hat to make and wear, but is also practical because it keeps the sun off the wearer's head and face. The hat is also environmentally savvy because it reuses soda cans. There are many variations on the style, but this is the classic soda can hat, perfect for a picnic, outdoor concert or in multiples for fabulous party hats. It requires only very basic crochet stitches and can be whipped up in an afternoon.
Things You'll Need

Preparing the Labels
-
1
Cut out six rectangles from the cans. Each should measure 3 1/2 inches by 4 inches and have the soda label in the middle.
-
2
Punch ten equidistant holes on each long side of each label rectangle, 1/4 inch from the edge. Add seven holes at the top and bottom of each label, also 1/4 inch from the edge.
-
-
3
Work two single crochet stitches in each hole and four single crochet stitches in each corner hole. Attach the labels with a simple running or overcast stitch using one strand of yarn in the yarn needle.
The Top of the Hat
-
4
Work one row of single crochet stitches around the tops of the labels and two single crochets between each label. Attach the end of the row to the beginning with a slip stitch here and for every row after this.
-
5
Stitch two chain stitches to begin Row 2, and then one double crochet in stitch from Row 1, except skip one of the stitches between the labels. Chain two stitches to begin Row 3, and then double crochet all the way around, skipping every fourth stitch from Row 2.
-
6
For Rows 4 and 5, chain two and then double crochet around, skipping every third stitch from the previous row.
-
7
For Rows 6 and 7, chain two and then double crochet in every other stitch. Draw the yarn tight, cut the end and draw it through the last loop. Bury the yarn end in the previous stitches.
The Brim
-
8
Start the brim by working a single crochet stitch in each existing stitch around the bottom of the labels. Work two stitches between the labels. Slip stitch the last stitch to the first for this row and each following row.
-
9
Chain 2 to begin Row 2, then double crochet in each of the first four stitches of Row 1 and work two double crochets in the fifth stitch. Repeat this pattern all the way around.
-
10
Begin Row 3 with two chain stitches, then double crochet in each of the first eight stitches of Row 2. Work two stitches in the ninth stitch from Row 2 and continue this pattern all the way around.
-
11
Start Row 4 with two chain stitches, and then double crochet in each of the first 16 stitches. Double crochet twice in the 17th stitch. Repeat this pattern all the way around.
-
12
Finish with a row of single crochet stitches in each stitch of Row 4. Cut the yarn and draw the end through the last loop. Bury the yarn end in the previous stitches.
