Amigurumi is a special method of crocheting or knitting. People who practice amigurumi work "in the round," usually making circular or cylindrical shapes to produces whimsical toys that look like people, animals and everyday objects. Amigurumi is a Japanese technique. The word itself comes from two combined Japanese words that mean "knitting or crocheting" and "stuffed doll." Instructions

  1. Start Your Crochet Project

    • 1

Create the chain stitch by making a slipknot with the yarn and placing the loop on the crochet hook. Bring the yarn across the hook from back to front, then use the tip of the hook to grab the yarn and pull it the loop already on the hook. Drop the loop from the hook so that a new loop remains. Repeat grabbing the yarn, pulling it through and dropping loops off of the hook until you have made the prescribed number of chain stitches.

    • 2

Make the slip stitch by inserting the hook into a previously made stitch. You should already have one loop on your hook. Catch the yarn with the hook and pull it through the stitch as well as the loop on the hook. Drop the loop once you have pulled the yarn through it. A new loop should remain on your hook.

    • 3

Create the single crochet stitch by inserting the hook under the "V" shape of a previously made stitch. There should already be one loop on your hook. Grab the yarn with the tip to bring it through the stitch and pull a new loop up onto the hook. Grab the yarn again and pull it through both loops as you drop them off of the hook. A single new loop should remain.

    • 4

Make a single crochet decrease by inserting the hook into a previously made stitch. There should already be one loop on your hook. Grab the yarn to pull it through the stitch and bring up a new loop onto the hook. Do the same thing in the next stitch so that you have three loops on your hook. Grab the yarn a final time and draw it through all three loops as you drop them from the hook.

    Create Your Amigurumi Bear

    • 5

Make six chain stitches. Join them into a round by making a slip stitch in the first chain stitch. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.

    • 6

Make two single crochet stitches into each stitch in the round, so that you now have 12 stitches. In the next round, make a single crochet stitch into the first stitch and two single crochet stitches into the next stitch. Repeat this pattern until you finish the round. On the next round, make one single crochet stitch into the first two stitches, then make two single crochet stitches into the next stitch. Repeat this to complete the round. On the next round, make one single crochet stitch into the first three stitches, then make two single crochet stitches into the next stitch. Repeat the pattern until the end of the round.

    • 7

Make one single crochet stitch into each stitch of the next two rounds. On the next round, make a single crochet decrease, then make a single crochet stitch into each of the next two stitches. Repeat this until you complete the round. On the next round, make a single crochet decrease, then make a single crochet stitch into each of the next stitch, repeating the pattern until you finish the round. One the next round, make single crochet decreases over all of the stitches. Cut the yarn with scissors, draw it through the last loop and use the tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends.

    • 8

Create an ear by making two chain stitches with the hook and yarn. Make five single crochet stitches into the second chain from the hook. This creates a semicircle. Cut the yarn, draw it through the last loop then use the tapestry needle to sew the ear in place on one side of the top of the bear's head. Repeat this to make the second ear.

    • 9

Cut a small circle from the felt. Use the embroidery thread and sewing needle to embroider a mouth and nose onto the felt. Amigurumi bears often feature mouths that are simply two lines that form an inverted "V" shape. Use the sewing needle and sewing thread to attach the felt piece to the bottom-middle of the bear's head.

    • 10

Sew the two small, round beads onto either side of the front of the head to complete your tiny amigurumi bear head.
