How to Make Facebook Smilies

How to Make Facebook Smilies thumbnail
A smiley face can be created with any standard keyboard.

Express yourself on Facebook by posting public comments on your wall, or a friend's, and by sending private messages. When words are not enough, create a smiley face to show that you are joking or laughing about something. While a smiley face will show up in any field where you type text, Facebook chat is especially designed to accommodate them. A smiley put into Facebook chat is translated into an emoticon by the site.

Instructions

    • 1

Click in the "Write a comment" field beneath any Facebook post or the "What's on your mind?" field at the top of the Facebook homepage. If you want to start a chat conversation, click on the gray "Chat" icon in the bottom right corner of any screen and then double-click on a friend's name.

    • 2

Type your message in the field you've chosen. When you are ready to insert a smiley into the message, type a colon (":") and then a closing parenthesis. The resulting symbol is a sideways smiley face --":)". Use a semi-colon (";") followed by a closing parenthesis to create a winking smiley face. A smiley can also be posted on its own, without any text.

    • 3

Hit the "Enter" key to post your message and smiley face. If you are posting to a Facebook wall, the symbol will remain just as you typed it. Smileys entered into Facebook chat are converted into a yellow circle with a smiling face--with or without a wink, depending on which characters you use--when you post the message.
