How to Decode Bitly Links

Bitly, an online URL shortening service, abbreviates the lengths of website URLs. URLs can be pretty long, especially for sites with many pages. The main reason to want a shorter URL still leading to the same address is to save space. For example, it is necessary to shorten a URL link when tweeting it and it is expedient to shorten URLs in emails. Sometimes, you want to reverse the shortening and get back the long URL from a Bitly link.

Decode from a Website

  • Launch your web browser.

  • Visit a website dedicated to decoding Bitly URLs, such as Xposition (see Resources.)

  • Copy the Bitly link into the field marked for such.

  • Click the “Get Expanded Link” button to decode and generate the long URL shortened into the Bitly link.

Decode with a Web Browser Add-on

  • Open your web browser. Not all browsers have such add-ons. Chrome does and so should Firefox.

  • Install the Chrome extension called View Thru. You can search the add-on section of Firefox for a Bitly Decoder. In Chrome, visit the Chrome Store and navigate to the Extensions category (see Resources.) Search for View Thru or Bitly Decoder and install the extension.

  • Mouse over the Bitly link you want to decode. A tool box will pop up and show the decoded URL.
