How to Draw a Girl Sitting Down

Save

The ability to draw different poses is easy when an action line starts the drawing. Action lines are the imaginary lines that depict what the person is doing. Once the action line is determined and drawn, the artist is then able to add basic shapes along the line that will reinforce the drawing to the action of the character. Afterward the artist will make any adjustments needed by erasing lines and reinforcing other lines. (See references 1 and 2)

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Black Pen
  • Sketch an action line to depict the girl sitting down. Typically this would be horizontal, vertical and horizontal. The first horizontal line represents the girl's back as being straight up and down. The vertical line represents the thighs extending out from the chair and the second horizontal line represents the lower legs extending down to the floor.

  • Sketch in the basic shapes to represent body parts such as an oval for the head, chest and hips.

  • Add definition and details to the body by adding lines to the basic shapes in order to connect them. For example, create a neck by adding two lines extending from the oval head shape and connecting to the chest.

  • Add details as necessary such as eyes, hair and clothes. Use one shape for the hair, unless there is a ponytail. Then use two shapes.

  • Trace over lines that are needed with a black pen and erase basic lines not needed such as the action line and basic shapes.
