How to Sew a Beanie

Save

A custom beanie hat can be stitched up in little time from cozy polyester fleece, which will not unravel and requires no hemming. You could sew a fleece beanie for every member of the family for a thoughtful handmade gift, especially for a family who enjoys winter sports. The beanies require no special pattern, but you should take careful measurements to make sure the hats fit snugly but not too tightly.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 1/4 yard polar fleece fabric
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Measure around the widest part of the head with the tape measure. Cut a piece of polar fleece fabric that is as long as the head circumference plus 1/2 inch and 9 inches wide with the scissors.

  • Fold the fabric in half with the right sides of the fabric facing each other and pin the short edges together with the straight pins. Sew a straight seam 1/4 inch from the fabric edges with the sewing machine to create a tube.

  • Thread the needle with 24 inches of thread and knot the long end. Sew 1-inch basting stitches 1/2 inch from the top edge of the tube. Pull the needle to gather the stitches gently but tightly.

  • Turn the beanie to the right side. Fold up the bottom edge of the completed beanie 2 inches.
