How to Know If Your UPS Shipment Needs a Signature

Save

When shipping items via UPS, there are instances when a shipper needs to utilize the signature confirmation option to ensure the package is received by the intended party. Examples include the shipment of controlled substances (e.g., prescription drugs), age-prohibited items (e.g., tobacco or alcohol), valuable goods or important documents requiring proof of receipt. In the event you're unsure, there are several options available to determine whether a signature is required for an expected shipment.

Available Options

  • 1) If you have the package tracking number and Internet access then you can use the UPS online tracking tool at UPS.com, which is the fastest method available for obtaining information, including any signature requirements.

    2) In the event you don't have the tracking number, signature requirements and all other relevant information can be obtained by calling UPS customer service directly at 1-800-742-5877.

    3) You can also contact the sending party to determine if the package shipped requires a signature to take delivery. If you're unable to sign for the package, simply request that the sender instruct UPS to cancel the signature requirement.

    4) Finally, you can contact UPS to make alternative arrangements for receipt or to determine if a note with your signature, or the signature of another individual (e.g. family member, roommate or neighbor) taking receipt of the package, will suffice.
