Love them or hate them, spiders are a part of everyday life. They creep into children's literature and inhabit adult thriller and horror films. These arachnids are a staple at Halloween. Whether you are illustrating one for your own purposes or teaching young children a lesson on them, making a spider using letters, numbers and symbols is a creative way to do it.
Things You'll Need
- Drawing utensil
Draw a figure eight. Make the top portion of the "8" smaller than the bottom. The small loop will serve as the front part, or head, of the spider's body.
Sketch the legs using the letter "L." All eight legs should come from the front portion of the body, four on each side. Connect the small line of the "L" to the body and draw the longer line forward for the front four legs. For the back four legs, draw the longer line in the opposite direction, toward the larger portion of the "8."
Draw the "@" symbol eight times at the very top of the "8." Most spiders have eight eyes -- but some have six -- in two rows of four.
Add two commas, one from each side of the top of the spider's head. These are the arachnid's antenna-like extremities.
Mimic hair or texture on the body and head with overlapping "X" letters for more detail.
Tips & Warnings
- Use the number eight as the basis for the lesson -- eight legs and eight eyes.
- For a three-dimensional figure, cut the number eight, letter Ls and @ symbols out of construction paper and adhere them with glue. Use a pencil or marker to make the Xs.
