How to Make a Signature Via a Mac

How to Make a Signature Via a Mac thumbnail
It's easy to add a signature on a Mac.

Wouldn't it be handy if you could add your signature to a document electronically rather than printing, signing, scanning and then sending the document the old way? This task might seem difficult, but anyone with a scanner and a moderate familiarity with a Mac can do it. Once an electronic signature has been created, it can be added to letters, used for insurance documents, used to approve drafts or any other item that usually requires a signature. Just be sure that your desired use for the signature is approved by your institution. Some documents must be signed by hand with ink.

Instructions

  1. Create Electronic Signature

    • 1

Sign your name a few times on a blank sheet of paper. Make sure you're getting the look you want for your electronic signature.

    • 2

Sign your name a few times on the final sheet of paper. You can scan the sheet with multiple signatures, and then choose the one you like the best once you see it on your computer screen.

Scan your page using your electronic scanner. Adjust your scanner setting to at least 300 dpi. A gray scale or black and white scan will work if using a black pen. Be sure to scan in color if using a blue pen. Save the file in a JPG format to a convenient location.

    • 4

Open the scanned image in "Preview" on your Mac. This can be found in the "Applications" folder.

    • 5

Select the signature that you want to copy with the cross-hair selection tool. There should be a dotted box surrounding the selection.

    • 6

Copy the signature to the clipboard by selecting "Edit" then "Copy".

    • 7

Create a new file from this signature by selecting "File" then "Create from Clipboard." This should create a file with just the signature you have chosen.

    • 8

Save the new file to a convenient location by selecting "File" then "Save As." Place the new signature file where it can easily be retrieved.

Tips & Warnings

  • I like to use a large felt tip pen for my scanned signature. It creates a clear image that stands out from the page.

  • Be careful to protect your signature at all times. Identity theft is on the rise.
