How to Make a Joker Hat for Halloween

How to Make a Joker Hat for Halloween thumbnail
A jester's hat is more striking if assembled of different colors.

The multi-colored, multi-tipped jester's hat is a key component to any joker costume. While you can make the hat in one color, most jesters will want at least two -- three or four is even better. The construction of the hat is straightforward, and you can execute the project by sewing or gluing the fabric together with fabric glue or hot glue. Keep in mind that fabric glue will not work to attach embellishments, like bells. Felt is an inexpensive and easy-to-work-with material for your hat, but plush or velvet will yield a more attractive final product.

Things You'll Need

  • Felt (at last 3 colors)
  • Small brass bells (jingle bells)
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Marker
  • Fabric glue or hot glue gun
  • Needle and thread
  • Embellishments, if desired

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the head of your jester-to-be. Divide the circumference of the head by the number of points you want on the hat. This will determine how wide the base of each point should be. For example, if the circumference measurement is 20 inches and you want four points on the hat, the base of each triangle should be 5 inches.

    • 2

Cut the fabric triangles for the points. You want the triangle to be longer than it is wide. For example, if the base of your point is 5 inches, then cut each triangle to be 7 inches to 10 inches on the long sides. Cut two equal-sized triangles for each point. (For a four point hat, you'll have eight triangles total.)

    • 3

Glue or sew two triangles of the same color together on the long sides so that they resemble flattened cones. Do this with all of the triangles. Turn them inside out. You may want to add a little filling in the end of the points to help fill them out. Fabric or even stuffing will work well. Glue or sew shut the short sides of the triangles.

    • 4

Cut a long rectangular piece of fabric that is 2-inches to 3-inches wide and 1-inch longer than the circumference measurement of the jester's head.

    • 5

Glue or sew the base of each point (triangle) onto the band.

    • 6

Sew or hot glue a bell to the end of each point.

    • 7

Sew or glue the two short ends of the band together to fit on your jester's head.
