How to Survive a Global Event

How to Survive a Global Event thumbnail
Preparing in advance is key to emergency survival.

A global event could involve an earthquake, an asteroid hitting the earth or a human-caused event such as a nuclear war or release of toxic chemicals. The eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in 1883 sent tidal waves around the world, killed tens of thousands of people and affected world weather patterns for months. More recently, the earthquake and tidal wave in Japan in March of 2011 damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant, releasing radiation that traveled around the world. Preparation for events of this or greater magnitude are seen as paranoid by some and as basic common sense by others. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Community Survival

    • 1

Meet your neighbors and develop trusting relationships with them. Contrary to popular belief, retreating alone to the woods is not the most effective means of survival. Being enmeshed in a functioning local community of people with useful skills is much more likely to help you to survive.

    • 2

Develop community based contingency plans for various emergencies. Focus on basics such as clean water, food and shelter. Store canned goods, but make long term plans as well for growing and producing your own food.

    • 3

Modify your home to make it as independent of public utilities as possible. Install solar electric panels and hot water panels on your roof. Put in a wood stove and enough dry firewood to get you through a winter. Install a large water storage tank and keep it filled. Start a garden and raise chickens for eggs and meat. Encourage your neighbors to do the same, so that as a group you can create an area that will remain stable and functioning in the event of widespread collapse.

    Individual Survival

    • 4

Put together a "go bag." This is a mobile emergency kit that you can grab at a moment's notice if you need to leave your location in a hurry. The contents of your go bag will vary depending on your circumstances, but could include cash, passport, water purification tablets, a portable and easily concealed weapon, maps, a cell phone, matches, contact addresses and telephone numbers, a knife and some emergency food rations.

    • 5

Buy a parcel of land in a secluded area and build an unobtrusive shelter. Get topographical maps to help you to reach it overland if necessary. Stock up your shelter with canned food, bottled water and seeds for starting a garden in the event of a long stay.

    • 6

Educate yourself about the possibilities for global events. Knowing what to expect will help you to maintain the equilibrium of your mind during trying times. A cool head and clear vision will do more than any material goods to help you to survive.
