Use a mineral oil emulsion to treat constipation.

A mineral oil emulsion is created by combining mineral oil with a powder made from the acacia tree. The mineral oil used in the emulsion is a petroleum-based product that has been refined to a state that can be safely ingested. A mineral oil emulsion is most commonly used as a treatment for constipation. It works by coating the inside of your intestinal surface and can be purchased without a prescription at your local pharmacy.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult with your doctor to confirm that taking mineral oil as a laxative will not present a health risk based on your medical condition.

    • 2

Shake the bottle containing the mineral oil emulsion well before using. Take the mineral oil emulsion on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after eating.

    • 3

Take one six to15-teaspoon dose daily as needed, or as directed by your doctor. Children 6 to 12 years of age can typically take two to five teaspoons. Pour the measured dose into a drinking glass and add a small amount of water, milk, fruit juice or soft drink. Stir well and drink. Do not exceed one dose of mineral oil per day.
