How to IM on Facebook on an iPad

As of May 2011, Facebook has not released an official iPad app enabling you to instant message, or IM, with your Facebook friends. But numerous third-party apps are available in the iTunes App Store that provide Facebook IM capabilities. These apps provide a simple interface for chatting with friends and family on your iPad through the Facebook IM protocol. Alternatively, you can utilize apps like IM+ Pro or BeejiveIM which are designed to consolidate all your instant messaging accounts, including Facebook, into a single interface.

Instructions

  1. Third-Party Facebook Apps

      Tap the "App Store" icon on your iPad home screen.

      Tap "Search" and search for Facebook chat apps such as "Chat for Facebook with Push" (99 cents), "Tap to Chat for Facebook Chat" (99 cents), or "Chat for Facebook" (free).

      Select the app you would like to install and tap the price, then "Buy App" if it is a paid app or "Install App" if it is a free app. Enter your iPad password to authorize the purchase.

      Tap the icon of the Facebook chat app you downloaded on your iPad home screen.

      Enter your Facebook user name and password, then tap "Login."

      Select a Facebook contact to start an instant messaging conversation. Use the on-screen keyboard to send messages once you have selected the contact.

    Multi-Protocol Apps
