How to Uninstall & Reinstall Java

Some computer applications and websites use the Java programming language for interactive elements and games. In order to use Java's features, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software on your computer. Java frequently releases new versions of the Java Runtime Environment that fix software bugs found in older versions or improve the software's performance. You may need to uninstall your older version of Java and reinstall a newer version.

      Log into Windows using your administrator account. Click the "Start" button and select "Control Panel." Click "Programs" followed by "Programs and Features" and select your version of Java in the programs list.

      Click "Uninstall" above the list of programs and click "Yes" on the confirmation dialog. Click "Yes" on the User Account Control message if it appears. Java will automatically uninstall.

      Open your preferred Web browser and navigate to Click the red "Free Java Download" button on the page and click "Agree and Start Free Download" on the next page that opens. Click "Save" when your browser prompts you to download the file.

      Double-click the Java setup file when it finishes downloading. Confirm that you want to open the file if the User Account Control prompt appears. Click "Install" on the "Java Setup - Welcome" screen to reinstall Java. Click "Close" after the installation process completes.
