How to Make a Mud Hole for Pigs
Pigs love to wallow in mud as it soothes their skin and works as an insect repellant. Whether you are keeping pigs on a farm or have a pet potbellied pig, they will enjoy having a place where they can get wet. Although pet pigs can use kiddie wading pools as a place to moisten their hides, they'll prefer an old fashioned mud hole. Mud pits are really just a hole in the ground filled with water.

1
Dig a shallow depression in the ground. Make it large enough for however many pigs will be using it at one time. The hole should be about a foot deep, with gently sloping sides, so your pigs can easily climb in and out.

2
Layer the pit with soil if your ground is mostly hard clay, or another substance which doesn't produce a good mud. Garden soil can be bought by the sack or truck load from garden supply stores.

Add water to your dirt-filled pit. Start with enough to moisten everything down. Continue adding until you have mud, instead of a puddle. The amount of water will depend on how large your pit is. As the mud pit dries, simply add more water.
