How to Make a Collage in GIMP

Save

GIMP is a free graphics and photo-editing application that is widely used both by amateurs and professionals who want to avoid the expensive involved in purchasing a commercial photo editing application. There are many types of projects you can carry out successfully in GIMP, from creating Web-page graphics to designing posters and signs. For example, you might like to create a photo collage.

  • Load the photos that you want to use in your collage onto your computer in whatever size or format you prefer, since GIMP accepts virtually any type of raster (bitmap) file.

  • Open GIMP. Click "File" from the menu at the top and choose "New." In the dialog that appears on the screen, enter the width, height and resolution you want for your collage. Click "OK."

  • Click "File" from the menu and choose "Open as Layers." In the dialog that appears, locate the images you loaded.

  • Hold down the "Ctrl" key on the keyboard and click the images to select them. Click "Open" and all of the images appear on their own layers in "Layers" panel.

  • Select one of the image layers. Use the "Move," "Scale" and "Rotate" tools to get the photo where you want it in the collage. Repeat this with all of the image layers and save your work.
