Maps are cartographic documents used for visually representing a physical area. Maps have been in use for centuries as travel guides and reference documents. Creating a historical map gives the reader an illustrative account of times gone by and the way physical space was used in earlier days. Historical maps are also beneficial for orientation and comparison purposes. Make your map with family, friends or school mates to create a product that is both visually appealing and enlightening.

Instructions

    • 1

Research historical texts and images to develop a full understanding of the area you intend to map. Obtain exact measurements and identifying properties to make your map accurate.

    • 2

Draw land boundaries with specificity and accurate outlines. Use different colored pencils or markers to differentiate land and water bodies, elevations, state lines and/or community borders.

    • 3

Identify important historical landmarks on your map. Draw in actual images and/or symbols representing government buildings or famous hotels or theaters, for example. Classify the landmark symbols in a key or legend at the bottom of the map. Use a quill pen when writing to lend a historical feel of blotted ink to the map.

    • 4

Write out points of geographical designation. Name all the streets or towns, for example, either on the body of the map or in the key or legend at the bottom.

    • 5

Crumble the map to give it a wrinkled and haggard look. Dose the map with a splash of cold coffee to make it looked stained and aged. Singe the corners of the map with flame for an antiquated and aesthetic punch.
