How to Repaint a Glazed Pot
Painted masonry such as flowerpots often are glazed to protect the color and finish. But this doesn't necessarily mean that the finish is attractive. In fact, you might be able to find cheap glazed pots that can be repainted at discount stores simply because they have been rejected by other buyers. You don't have to live with a pot that has an ugly color or pattern, even when heavy glaze was applied. By preparing a glazed pot correctly, you can repaint it. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Medium-grit sandpaper
- Rags
- Liquid white glue
- Paintbrushes
- Acrylic craft paints
- Water-based polyurethane

Lightly sand the pot's surface using medium-grit sandpaper. Do this until the pot's surface feels roughened evenly. Wipe the pot with a rag to remove sanding residue.

Paint the pot's exterior with liquid white glue. Apply the glue evenly over the pot's surface. Let the glue dry. Apply a second layer of glue in the same manner.

Check that the second layer of glue is dry. It should not feel sticky. Paint a background color over the exterior with acrylic paint. Apply the paint smoothly and evenly, just like the glue.

Allow the paint to dry. Add a second layer of base color and allow it dry. Use various colors to paint a new design on the pot. Allow the paint to dry for 12 to 24 hours. Finally, apply three coats of water-based polyurethane, allowing time to dry between each coat, to the surface.
