How to Split a Stereo Track in Audacity

Songs that have been recorded and compressed into one stereo track are capable of being split into two mono tracks using Audacity. This allows you to modify and edit the left and right channels independently without making changes to your entire project. When exporting your project, you can choose to recombine the mono tracks into one stereo track or export each mono track individually.

  • Import your audio sample into Audacity by clicking "File," followed by "Import."

  • Click the track's title and a pop-down menu should appear.

  • Select "Split Stereo Track" from the pop-down menu. This should split your stereo track into a left and right channel.

  • If you wish to recombine the mono tracks into one stereo track, simply click "Make Stereo Track" from the pop-down menu. When you do this, the top track will represent the left speaker and the bottom track will represent the right speaker.
