Instructions for the Bill Nye Paper Recycling Factory

You can talk to children day and night until you are blue in the face about the importance of recycling. Or you can demonstrate the process for them and put them to work making their own recycled paper. The Bill Nye paper recycling center is a handy home lab activity that teaches kids the steps taken to make new paper out of old fibers. Best of all, the kit is simple to use and the instructions are clear and easy to follow.

  • Tear up two to three sheets of newspaper into tiny pieces. The ideal size for the pieces is about 1 inch.

  • Place the paper into the soaking tray and add hot water. Let the paper soak for at least two hours in the hot water, although longer is better.

  • Pour the soaked paper along with half a cup of water into the hand blender. Place the lid on top and grind the paper into pulp.

  • Add 1 tbsp. of the glue and mix a little more with the blender.

  • Place the pulp into your paper press with the cleaning fabric covering the press's bottom.

  • Press the pulp to drain out the access water and compress it into paper.

  • Remove the paper along with the cleaning fabric and set out to dry for 24 hours.
