How to Stop a Blinking Cursor

Save

When using various applications, such as web browsers and text editors, you may have a blinking cursor. If you prefer not to have a blinking cursor, you can make modifications to the computer registry to disable the blinking. Some programs, such as Mozilla Firefox, have their own method to disable the blinking cursor, where pressing "F7" disables it (this is also known as caret browsing). Completing the process through the registry disables it for all applications.

  • Click "Start" and type "regedit" into the search box. Press "Enter" to bring up the registry editor.

  • Navigate to the key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop" by expanding the folders in the left-hand menu.

  • Right-click in the empty white space in the right-hand panel and select "New" then "String."

  • Enter "CursorBlink" for the string name and "-1" for the value.

  • Click "OK" to add the string, and then close the registry editor.

  • Restart your computer to apply the changes.
