If you have an autographed item signed by a celebrity or sports player, such as a baseball, hat, T-shirt or album, you will want that autograph to last for as long as possible so the item retains its sentimental and monetary value. Permanent markers, like Sharpies, can fade over time, but collectors use many methods to help keep Sharpie ink readable.

Avoid handling the item that the Sharpie is written on. Excessive handling causes fading.

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly if you have to handle the item. Clean, dry hands with no lotions or oils are less likely to cause fading.

Put the item in a display case. Less exposure to the elements prevents the ink from fading.

Move the display case out of direct sunlight. Excessive UV rays can cause damage to the item and Sharpie ink.
