How to Turn Off WiFi on a Dell

Most Dell computers have wireless capabilities built in. As wireless standards have changed over time, so have computers' capabilities. For example, earlier Dell laptops could connect only with 802.11b or 802.11g, but newer Dell laptops can connect with newer wireless standards, such as 802.11n. Dell laptop computers have a hardware switch to toggle the Wi-Fi connection. You can turn off Wi-Fi on a Dell laptop computer by toggling the switch.

  • Power on the Dell laptop computer and wait for Windows to load.

  • Hold the "Fn" key on the keyboard.

  • Press the "F2" key to toggle the wireless off. This disables the Wi-Fi card inside the computer until "Fn" and "F2" are pressed simultaneously again.

Tips & Warnings

  • This process disables the wireless card, which is different from disconnecting from a wireless network. To disconnect from a wireless network, click the wireless icon in the lower right corner of the screen. Click the currently connected wireless network, then click the "Disconnect" button.
