Printing designs on linen fabric is a great way to personalize fabric items or gifts for loved ones. Many people print on linen fabric to create the popular patches that you can sew onto your backpacks or other items. However, fabric printing is also commonly used for designing personalized quilts of various sizes. If you own an inkjet printer, you can print your own designs on linen fabric to create beautiful quilts and various other fabric items.
Things You'll Need
- Inkjet printer
- Linen fabric
- Liquid fabric soak solution
- Freezer paper
- Graphics software
- Printer paper
Cut the fabric to the desired size with scissors. The fabric should be slightly bigger than the size of the paper your printer accommodates.
Add a small amount of liquid fabric soak solution in a bowl. Soak the fabric in the solution for approximately five to ten minutes.
Allow the fabric to set until it is completely dry.
Lay the fabric on a flat surface. Place the freezer paper on the fabric with the shiny side against the fabric.
Heat the iron. Apply the freezer paper to the fabric by ironing it onto the fabric.
Use scissors to cut the fabric to a size that is slightly smaller than the size of the paper your printer accommodates. Ensure to cut threads from the fabric so they do not get stuck in the printer during the printing process.
Obtain the desired image or create your own graphic with graphics software such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.
Remove a paper from the printer's paper tray and make a mark with a pencil on one side of the paper. Reinsert the paper with the pencil mark facing up in the printer's tray. Print your design on the sheet of paper.
Check where the pencil mark is located when the paper exits the printer to determine how to insert the fabric into the printer. If the pencil mark is on the same side as the design, insert your fabric into the printer with the freezer paper backing facing down. If the pencil mark is on the opposite side of the design, insert the fabric with the backing facing up in the tray. Ensure to remove any printer paper from the tray when the fabric is in the tray.
Print the design on the fabric. Allow the fabric and ink to dry to approximately 30 minutes.
