Click twice on the file to change the file extension name in Vista.

Changing a file extension's name could prevent you from reading the file once it is done; however, changing a file name's extension can be useful, for example, when you need to see a ".txt" file in your Web browser. You first need to allow Vista to change file extensions, then you can change the extension's name.

Instructions

  1. Show File Extension

    • 1

Click the "Start" button at the bottom-left side of your screen. Click on "Computer."

      A window will pop up.

    • 2

Press the "Alt" key on your keyboard. A hidden menu will appear.

    • 3

Click "Tools." Scroll down and press "Folder Options."

    • 4

Select the "View" tab. Scroll down and untick "Hide extensions for known file types." Click "OK."

    Change File Extension

    • 5

Click over the file for which you want to change the extension.

    • 6

Click on the file again after waiting a few seconds. The file's name should be highlighted now.

    • 7

Erase the extension and change it to the extension you need.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you change a file's extension name, you will not be able to open the file with the same software you used to open it with.
