How to Install a Desktop File Extension in Vista
Changing a file extension's name could prevent you from reading the file once it is done; however, changing a file name's extension can be useful, for example, when you need to see a ".txt" file in your Web browser. You first need to allow Vista to change file extensions, then you can change the extension's name.

Click the "Start" button at the bottom-left side of your screen. Click on "Computer."
A window will pop up.

Press the "Alt" key on your keyboard. A hidden menu will appear.

Click "Tools." Scroll down and press "Folder Options."

Select the "View" tab. Scroll down and untick "Hide extensions for known file types." Click "OK."

Click over the file for which you want to change the extension.

Click on the file again after waiting a few seconds. The file's name should be highlighted now.

Erase the extension and change it to the extension you need.

Tips & Warnings
If you change a file's extension name, you will not be able to open the file with the same software you used to open it with.
