How to Draw a Pomegranate

How to Draw a Pomegranate thumbnail
Pomegranates are interesting items to draw.

Fruit of all types have long been popular subjects for artists. The pomegranate is quite unusual in appearance, making it an interesting item to draw. You may find it difficult to accurately portray a pomegranate, as the shape, color and texture of this fruit are unlike those of any other. Studying a real pomegranate and paying special attention to the physical traits of the fruit will help you to draw it more easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pomegranate on the table in front of you. Observe the shape of the fruit, and draw an outline on your paper that matches the outline of the real fruit. The shape of the pomegranate may be oval or round, depending on the individual piece of fruit.

    • 2

Draw the stem of the pomegranate. Using the real pomegranate for reference, observe the placement of the stem in relation to the fruit, and draw what you see. The edges of the stem may be perfectly round, or they may have a wavy appearance.

    • 3

Observe the highlights and shadows of the real pomegranate. Draw them on your paper using light shading with your pencil. Sketch any shadows cast onto the table using light pencil shading in these areas, as well.

    • 4

Look closely at the real pomegranate fruit for any small details that you would like to include in your drawing. Details such as scars, bumps or ridges in the fruit's skin can make your drawing appear more realistic.

Tips & Warnings

  • To add more interest to your drawing, add color using colored pencils.

  • To add dimension to your drawing, create a background for your pomegranate. You may choose to draw the background as you see it in your room, or you may decide to use another background, such as a landscape. A background that is simply a light shading done with your pencil can help the pomegranate stand out.
